Throwing Down the Idols

This one will be short.

In a discussion earlier this week, a good friend (and mentor) pointed out that during this time of quarantine and shutdown, we have been seeing the casting down of idols… for those with eyes to see. As the seeming chaos has grown and raged, we have also seen the effective alienation of nearly everyone, from all walks of life – at least across my country.

I can only assume that the same or similar is occurring throughout the world as well. In fact, I hope and pray that this is the case.

Currently, in the United States, we are seeing record low ratings throughout numerous sporting industries and, make no mistake – sports are a huge idol in my culture. Most Americans know more about their favorite sports team or athlete than they ever have known about God, the Messiah, or what scripture actually says.

It has been said before, but bears repeating; “what you think about most – that is your god.” If that god isn’t the one true God, you are making an idol. We’ve all done this and we all need to just stop.

Personally, I think that’s what’s happening in the physical is that, while all of the professional athletic associations are “taking a knee”, they are effectively alienating their audience. Turns out BLM isn’t everyone’s sacred cow and sports fans aren’t interested in having politics shoved down their throats in order to watch grown people play a damn game.

This of course, isn’t limited to the sport industry – we’re seeing a decline across the board in all matters entertainment – music, television, movies, you name it. I could go on here and even offer specific examples of media manipulation that has become painfully obvious, but I’ve covered this before.

The point here is that I believe we are seeing the systematic dismantling of cultural idolatry taking place within the spiritual and manifesting in the physical – or to put it another way, we’re seeing the actions taken in a higher dimension, spilling over into our lower one. Have a look at this article for more on that topic.

In the end. the ultimate point I am getting to is that this toppling of idolatry is essential if we are to see the answer to our collective generational prayer for revival made manifest:

If my people, who bear my name, will humble themselves, pray, seek my face and turn from their evil ways, I will hear from heaven, forgive their sin and heal their land.

2 Chronicles 7:14 CJB

This scripture… this promise was given to Israel, but the principle to which it speaks stands today for all believers in all lands. If we are His people, then let’s be His people. Let us be about Him, about His word, about His mind and about His purposes.

This matters.

Personally, I kneel for one and one only. You’ll know when He arrives.

Until next time,

שלום עליכם – Shalom Aleichem – Peace Be Upon You
